During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring advice to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda featuring:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
