French authorities will start stopping migrant vessels in Channel after British demands
France has agreed to begin stopping small boats in the English Channel, after months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to support the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French security forces will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to official statements.
French police have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both personnel and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Now, a French maritime police spokesperson states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.
Significantly, the official ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible technique to disable the engines of the vessels.
The decision to take action at all is a major step forward, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the previous government official left office.
That was highlighted in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.
Currently French authorities will again be allowed to stop boats before they collect migrant individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking methods to adjust to evade detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
